Dr Newnham is a Fellow of The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists she completed her Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle in 1992. She then undertook her internship and medical residency training at the John Hunter and Newcastle Mater Hospitals before completing training in psychiatry at the James Fletcher Hospital Campus. Dr Newnham has since dedicated her career to improving mental health care in the Hunter Region. She has extensive experience in the public mental healthcare system in the region. She worked with the Hunter New England Health Service for several years in both clinical and managerial roles. Together with psychologist colleagues Melissa Weismantel and Paul Constable, Dr Newnham founded Denison Practice in 2011.
Dr Newnham is a generalist adult psychiatrist, but holds special interests in several areas, including complex post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociative identity disorder, mental health and obesity as well as the management of patients complex medical and psychiatric needs. Dr Newnham firmly believes in promoting the health and wellbeing of health care providers in order to achieve a better system for patients across all areas of medicine and allied health. She holds an appointment with the Health Practitioners Council Authority of NSW as an Appointed Assessor
